Robin
Canon/Non-Canon- Canon
Birth Name- Richard ‘Dick’ John Grayson
Secret Identity- Robin
Nicknames- Bird Boy, The Boy Wonder, Robby-Poo
Gender- Male
Age- 16
Race- Human
Alliance- Teen Titans
Alignment- Good
Citizenship- Hero
Physical Appearance- At the awkward age of 16, Robin is reaching manhood and his appearance shows this vividly, even with his trademark mask and costume. While still with minimal facial hair, his jaw is starting to develop, and his mouth shows a full set of adult teeth. A straight, slightly long nose is capped by the black mask that Robin is always seen wearing, underneath which are stand-out blue eyes. While still technically a teen, Robin shows the signs of having his parent’s good looks, as well as their jet-black hair, which Robin chooses to gel into high spikes.
Surprisingly thin for a hero, Robin still has not developed the kind of muscle that his mentor and other older heroes seem to possess, despite him gaining weight and bulk by the day. Having grown a number of inches since the formation of his team, he stands taller than most of his team, with the exception of Cyborg.
Despite this mixed array of age-indicating features, he still looks the part of the hero, his body bedecked in the Robin outfit and the trademark cocky grin.
Uniform- Robin still wears the uniform he first donned as Batman’s trusty sidekick, as well as using the same alias as part of the teen titans. Though the uniform is quite colourful, the only thing covering his face (and his secret identity) is the black mask, his bright blue eyes covered by white lenses. On his shoulders rests a cape attached around his neck, black with a yellow opposite side, which hangs down to his upper thighs, resting on top of his signature top. The top is bright red, with short green sleeves and three small yellow striped on the upper chest, as well as the robin insignia printed on his left breast. A yellow utility belt contains his equipment, and green leggings cover his legs down to the ankle, where his boots cover. Jet black, with silver toe-plates and sole, the shoes are heavy-duty and have built in shock-absorbers in case of large falls.
Outer Personality- Robin is the stoic leader of the teen titans, constantly striving for perfection and flawlessness, his seriousness often clashing with the more laid back members of the team. His obsessiveness and stubborn personality drive him to great lengths in his crime-fighting, but luckily his time with the titans has taught him the importance of friendship. Now he is able to occasionally take time out of hero duty to spend with his friends, who he considers family, though he will still often be found working overtime on a case. The public sees him as the brave leader, the titans see him as a friend, and yet none of them see the part of him that he hides behind the mask, and he takes it as his responsibility to reject weakness and vulnerability in an effort to be a hero, showing his secret identity to no-one out of loyalty to Batman.
Inner Personality- Though Robin still has all the personality traits of a hero, his emotions are often hidden beneath an aloof facade. Often unsure or uncomfortable, he loves his friends, but is sad that he cannot share his secret identity with them. This is especially the case with Starfire, who he has become especially close to over his time as a teen titan. With hatred for crime and evil, Robin often sees the world as black and white, but often realises this isn’t the best way to approach matters.
Powers/Abilities- Robin doesn’t technically have any ‘superpowers’ to speak of, though he makes up for his lack of powers with a wide range of skills and all the gadgets of a SWAT team.
Robin is in peak physical condition, with amazing strength and endurance for a human of his age, as well as stamina and speed. Even more impressive than this is his acrobatic ability, already being a prodigious athlete, nearly able to rival Olympic level acrobats. His agility, dexterity and balance are far beyond those of most humans, and he is able to pull off multiple somersaults and twists with relative ease, working them into his martial arts.
Having been trained in multiple forms of martial arts by his mentor Batman, he is a superb fighter, able to spar with many super powered foes through use of sheer martial prowess. This, combined with his skill with the bo-staff (among other weapons), means he makes up for his lack of superpowers.
In addition to physical abilities, Robin has a variety of skills, all courtesy of the thorough training he received from Batman. Detective and skills of analysis have become second nature to the Boy Wonder, and he can easily make accurate deductions if presented with the slightest evidence. In addition to this, he is proficient in escapology, able to escape from almost any kind of situation. As well as this, he is skilled in criminology and psychology, meaning he has a great grasp of people’s motives and the methods of his foes, the only foe he has been unable to analyse and understand easily is Slade, who seems somewhat odd in his determination to destroy the Teen Titans. However, these skills are far from perfected and he continues to try and hone these abilities so that he can match his mentor and ward – Batman.
These skills help to enhance his already high intellect, which is the reason for his great rallying skills – he keeps contact with a range of titans and heroes, even having links to the famed Justice League of America (an accomplishment for a mere teen sidekick). Robin has superlative leadership skills, surpassing all other titans, which is the sole reason that he leads his team. Having gained the respect of his teammates, he’s able to formulate and modify plans in the heat of battle and have his orders followed.
Weapons- Though Robin employs many weapons in his crime-fighting, he tends to rely on his extendable bo-staff to dole out punishment and justice. The thin yet surprisingly strong weapon is often used by the teen hero, and complements his fighting style. In addition to this, he has many projectiles, such as his razor-sharp birdarangs.
Gadgets and Gizmos- He doesn’t use anything particularly unique, Robin carries gadgets such as explosive discs, smoke bombs and tracking devices to use in battle.
History- Robin was born to John and Mary Grayson, an only child to the famous husband and wife acrobats known as ‘The Flying Grayson’s’. Home-tutored, he was also taught from an early age to perform acrobatics, and was a natural, becoming a proficient acrobat from an extremely young age. Despite being on the road and his parents constantly doing shows, he was very happy with his family and met many people on the road, and eventually, he became part of his parent’s act and a prodigious acrobat in his own right.
One night, he overheard two gangsters attempting to extort money out of a circus owner, who refused. Later that night, during the show, his parents were the trapeze act, and during a particularly dangerous manoeuvre, the ropes were cut and Dick’s parent’s plummeted to their death.
Distraught by the tragic event and left without anyone to take care of him, he attempted to hunt down the gangsters that caused his parent’s death whilst living on the street. Eventually he found the criminal behind it, but was badly beaten by the criminal, due to the fact that he was still a child, only 12 years old at the time. However, the boy was saved by the timely interference of Batman, who managed to fight off the angry gangsters. After healing, he was sent to a juvenile home, and later on to an orphanage. Old enough to resent the orphanage, and yet too young to live on his own, Dick attempted escape mere days after his move to the orphanage. The Dark Knight had kept an eye on the boy, and stopped his escape, telling him to return to the orphanage, and that he might not be there long. Dick returned humbled by the experience, and was soon after adopted by Bruce Wayne and made his legal charge.
Though grateful for being taken from the orphanage, Dick was slightly resentful as he did not want his father replaced. Natural curiosity and boredom led Dick to finding the Batcave, though he had already somewhat worked it out due to his dealings with Batman and Bruce. Batman, seemingly aware of Dick’s knowledge offered Dick a deal: to train and mentor him in return for his help as the boy wonder Robin. The boy accepted and trained rigorously in almost every field under the watchful eye of Gotham’s protector. After three months of gruelling training, he was deemed ready to be a sidekick to Batman, taking to the streets, still learning everything he could from the vigilante.
After proving his skill to Batman in a test, he helped hunt down his parent’s murderers and brought them to justice. Batman officially then adopted Dick as his son, and they worked well together, fighting crime as a team for a year. However, Robin was truly tested when Two-Face kidnapped a judge and forced Robin to make a decision between the death of the judge or Batman. Despite outsmarting the villain, Robin was unable to stop Two-Face from drowning the judge and was soon after beaten severely too. Batman managed to apprehend Two-Face, but Robin was emotionally scarred by the event. Months later, Robin again was injured, this time shot in the shoulder by the insane Joker, and Batman, hoping to save the boy from hurt, fired him amid a raging argument.
Robin became angry at his mentor and father, and moved out of the mansion, relocating to Jump City where he happened to meet a robotic man, a dark demonic girl, a goofy changeling and a pretty alien convict. The Teen Titans were born.
After the Titans got back from Tokyo, life returned to fairly normal (whatever ‘normal’ is for the titans), albeit with a slight shift in certain relationships between team members. Though they are still going strong fighting crime and managing their everyday lives, the Titans now have to contend with raging hormones, relationships and impending adulthood.
RPG sample Frantic footsteps could be heard as the youth ran down the alleyway, casting long shadows from the nearby streetlight. Trained eyes darted this way and that, searching for an escape route, his powerful legs tiring from the chase. A nervous gasp sounded and shoes skidded on concrete as he realised that he’d run into a dead-end.
“Shit” he muttered under his breath, cursing himself – he knew these streets like the back of his hand and he’d allowed himself to be ambushed and trapped. Trying to muster up some sort of defence, his hands nervously went to his belt, subconsciously checking for any gadgets. Beads of perspiration started to appear on his forehead as Robin realised with a start that he was unarmed, as well as fatigued and outnumbered.
Any hope he harboured that he had outran his pursuer was gone when he heard maniacal laughter erupt from the mouth of the alley. The silhouette moved closer to the agitated Titan, who silently wished for any sort of intervention, severely regretting having his communicator destroyed.
O.K, look for a weakness, something that means you can end this fast! Robin thought frantically, his strategic mind on overdrive as he searched desperately for some way out of this horrible predicament. A scream in the distance, a fly on the wall and the stench of oil in the air shifted into sharp focus as the malicious eyes of the predator turned upon his grim-faced prey.
“Let’s do this” Robin muttered, barely audible as the frenzied breathing of his enemy reached its peak.
Something changed, and now Robin was confident, grinning with confidence as he drew the villain’s attention up to the re-enforcing Titans staring down at him from the rooftops.
