'Lindvurm'
Canon/Non-Canon- Original Character
Birth Name- Maylee Phillips
Secret Identity- Lindvurm
Nicknames- 'Lin', 'The Siren'.
Gender- Female
Age- 15
Race- Human (Mutant?)
Alliance- None- currently 'hiding'.
Alignment- Presumably good.
Citizenship- Hero; however, as she simply appeared from nowhere, so no one is quite sure of this fact. (She likes to think she's a hero at least.)
Physical Appearance- Rather pale skinned, with a slight bluish tinge to it, the tone is thankfully unnoticed enough for her to pass as 'sickly pale'. Lin's eyes are a rather vivid blue, while her hair is mid-back in length and completely black, though when the light shines on it the highlights appear to be blue. Lin tends to keep her eyes wide open with a 'fox grin', even if she feels upset (Though her eyebrows will betray this apparent happiness.)
Generally, due to the conditions of her ability to shift, Lin wears a floor length skirt and nothing underneath, varying in color. She also wears a backless shirt that is held up by arm loops, so that if she needs to shift there isn't any cloth in the way. The bottom of the shirt appears to connect to the skirt, further holding this precaution in place. It tends to be blue in color.
Uniform- Though she's yet to finish making an 'official' uniform due to the fact that anything in the way of what would become flesh would get torn to shreds, she leaves her skirt off and bottom half completely shifted for 'hero work', and uses a cheap mask over her face. Lin also ties her hair back and up, further hiding her identity when coupled with her fins.
Outer Personality- A seemingly cheerful sort, Lin believes that happiness is the answer to everything. She's always smiling, to the point where it gets her into trouble during tense situations, but her heart is in the right place, and she enjoys nothing more than helping... Anyone really. Naive as she is, she still has a fair bit of book smarts to back it up, though it unfortunatly leaves her open to gulibility or false hope.
Lin is also rather open about things not related to her ability, which tends to prevent people from asking too many questions; she's already talking enough after all, no need to make her continue! This openness and talkative personality flows into one of her intrests, namely kareoke singing. (She apparently likes to sing in the evening more recently, gaining another nickname; 'Siren'.)
Inner Personality- Feeling rather alone after the incident across the seas with her family, Lin is a very confused, and very scared individual. The only thing keeping her from bursting into tears is the belief that if she remains positive, things will turn out well. She believes that everyone has good in them, even villans, and if she isn't careful, she'll find herself taking a fall that most would not recover from.
This view on people is kept quiet during arguements and battles however, and though she doesn't enjoy fighting too much, she convinces herself that it's nessecary to protect the others of the city she lives in- after all, for every one saved, there's someone else who needs help, right?
Secretly, Lin wonders if her ability is 'good enough' to be considered as a 'super power', and is afraid of people telling her that her power is benign, or useless.
Powers/Abilities- Shapeshifting - Lin can partially and completely turn into a creature known as 'The King of Herrings', or 'The Oarfish', a scaleless, snake-like fish with no teeth. Certain aspects of this shift can be merged with her own body to enhance certain abilities; for example, the normally bendy and palmsized rays of the Oarfish's fins can be strengthened by the marrow of her bones, creating a fairly deadly 'natural' switch blade. Or, she could use her teeth in the mouth of the oarfish, using her full size to increase both the force behind her jaw, and the size of the jaw itself.
In addition, the oarfish is made up of a fairly gelatanous flesh, which doesn't bleed easily. By replacing certain muscles with this flesh, she can avoid being bled out during a fight, or even being crushed, due to the fish's natural ability to sustain the pressures of up to 3,300 feet below sea level; to compare, the pressure at 10 feet is already twice that of the surface, and enough to put 'weight' on the chest cavity, where the air is.
However, she hasn't realized most of this yet, and thus, has yet to do any of the more 'mixed shifting' mentioned above. The closest she has gotten is taking a 'half form', with her waist down being complete, to-scale, 'oarfish', and her upper half normal save for webbed hands, a long fin sprouting from her head down her back in a crest, and the two neck 'strings' from the fish sprouting from her throat. In addition, she has her gills located at the sides of her ribs.
An interesting point is that any portion of the body below her full height as human could be completely decaptitated, but if she were to return to human form she would be comepletely fine... In fact, given a few days rest, she would be able to shift back into a full oarfish. Anything higher would cause damage to her legs and above, as well as near-fatal injury without further treatment. (Again, after a few days rest, she could theoretically shift into the fish form, and then back into the human form to regain any lost limbs. It would presumably cause a lot of pain however, and any interruptions could likely skew the process...)
All in all, combining all of her abilities, she could probably take the form of a fairly frightening looking sea serpent. That or, as her 'name' suggests, a 'Lindworm', a two 'legged', flightless dragon.
Weapons- None other than herself.
Gadgets and Gizmos- None.
History- Born and raised in Brisbane, Austrailia, Maylin's life was fairly 'average' for a majority of her life. In fact, her 'mutation' is an incredibly recent development. Spending much of her life attending public school and living the suburban life, she was considered a fairly bright young girl, with a lot ahead of her in life.
However, during a boating trip, a storm would occur. Maylin, who had fallen asleep listening to music on deck, would fall over during the attempt to get back inside, lost to the seas... Only for her ability to kick in.
She isn't sure how it works; all she could remember was a frighteningly large 'serpent-like' fish charging her as she sank and drowned, and the next thing she knew, she was breathing. The fish was gone... Or was she the fish? Confused, she fled to deeper waters before eventually calming herself down and falling asleep.
The currents took her to an unknown area; She had managed to, from the EAC they'd been boating in, get swirled around and stuck in the Equatorial Counter. From there, she was trapped in the northern currents, eventually coming ashore near Jump City.
Managing to retake human form, she searched around for clothes, some food, and some information. She was certain that her family thought she was dead- looking at her now sickly pale complexion, she decided that she mind as well be to them. Maylin was no more... Struggling to hold a smile, she wondered what there was to do now.
The answer came rather quickly when a young girl who'd given her some food became trapped in a hostage situation. Following the kidnappers to the docks, she attempted to save her, only to find them both stuck in the sea. Afraid of what would happen if she became a fish again, she found herself caught half way... And a few moments later, a choking, but otherwise fine little girl was found running up the beach to tell her parents about the 'mermaid' that saved her.
'Lin', as she'd taken to calling herself after later works would spawn the name 'Lindworm', eventually found a place to stay in what appeared to be a cave hollowed out by erosion on. Ironically enough, it was on the very island that the Titans Tower is on. More often than not, she only sleeps there however, and as she tends to travel around down there as a fish, she tends to be rather undetected... Granted it's only been a few days...
But she hopes that if she's found out they'll let her stay- she doesn't quite know what she'd do otherwise.
RPG sample It was the middle of the night; everyone and everything in the area was sound asleep, but for some reason, she could not. If anyone were to look, a long, strange looking fish would poke its head out of a small cave beneath the water. The location, while well known, didn't matter to the fish, to herself. She swam out with a shirt gripped in her mouth, leaving the island behind her and heading to a well known, hidden location she'd found.
Arms exited the water in the abandoned shore warehouse, followed by a head, torso, and below the waist a long, scale-less fish tail. The roof of the building was gone, as were most of the walls. She could see the moon and stars clearer than ever before, and it made her smile. "This reminds me of a song..." The water rippled, as though the ocean and its inhabitants were answering her. "Want me to sing it?"
Passers by would later shake their heads in confusion and disbelief. Mermaids- who'd have thought!
